Shannon and Matt had their wedding reception a couple weeks ago. The wedding was a little earlier in the month -- in Alaska! Typically, destination weddings are in Hawaii, San Diego, or someplace like that -- places a bit more tropical than Alaska. But then, Shannon and Matt aren't all that typical.Since they didn't have their friends and family around for the wedding, they had a reception here in Columbus. We started out with portraits at Highbanks Metro Park, and then moved on to dinner at Hyde Park. There was a surprise fish cake (no, not that kind of fish cake) and some other great moments.

Newborns have such a unique look that they lose after the first two weeks of life. Mason had actually been in once before, but you couldn't see him -- they were maternity portraits! ;-) It looks like he filled out a little in his first eleven days of life.Take a look at all that hair!

A couple weeks ago I met Christine and Tom over in Goodale Park in Columbus for some engagement portraits. They're getting married in San Diego, and were going to get their engagement portraits done on the beach there, but it didn't work out. So they found me to do it here in Ohio, and I'm so glad they did. We just walked around the park, having a great time, and stopped every once in a while.Make sure to see the slideshow for more images.

Of course, we had to go to the playground.

Owen was one of our very first kids when we started the Baby's First Year plan. He has come back several times, now. He was a little shy at first, but he warmed up quickly, and was as energetic as ever.

A little back-story on this one. Way back when I was a freshman in high school (or maybe a sophomore), a friend of mine came back from summer vacation with a new electric guitar. The brand was Squier! I couldn't believe it. And it was actually spelled the "correct" way and everything. Squier is the "value brand" of Fender guitars.
Ever since then (ca. 1982 or 83) I've always wanted one. But, you know, I'm not a guitar player so it was never going to happen. Well, I recently found out that the Squier brand came out with a 3/4 size Stratocaster that was perfect for kids. Now this was something I couldn't really pass up. I got one as a prop. So, we had a lot of fun playing with it and taking pictures. I make a tiny appearance in the slideshow, but don't let that stop you from checking it out. So, turn up the volume and get a cup of coffee -- it's a pretty long slideshow.

Kyle is another one of our Senior reps to Dublin Coffman High School. We ended up doing the outside portraits on a different day because it started pouring. In any case, the sessions went really well. Here are a few images. There are lots more in the slideshow.

What a beautiful wedding this was. The weather could have been better, with the storm and loud thunder, but other than it being a bit damp, everything was perfect. The ceremony was at First Community Church in Upper Arlington.

They released butterflies after the ceremony. Luckily, the rain had slowed and they flew away.

This was set up afterwards. I really like the way Lacey and Everett are backlit.

The reception site was a little soggy. Raymond Memorial Golf Course is a great location. They wouldn't let us take the carts out -- for some reason the tornado warning was the culprit.

Yep. Jumping, heels, and soggy grass. It's amazing no one slipped.

The attention to detail was amazing.

The cake, complete with Han Solo and Princess Leia, of course.

Someone had to "ring" their glass right away, and this is what resulted.

We went out again at sunset for some more outside portraits.

Last week Jessica came in for her Senior Portraits and what a fun time we had. The weather was beautiful and we got some amazing images.

Doesn't the flare look great in this one. I love it.

Wow! That pretty much sums up the wedding of Melissa and David. These are some of the nicest people you could ever meet and their wedding was wonderful. We started in the evening and were there for only five hours -- and it couldn't have been better. Well, it started out kind of rough, but once everyone was at the venue, it went flawlessly.

The wedding and the reception were at the Venue at Smith Brothers in downtown Columbus. This is a historic hardware building with beautiful brick walls and a great atmosphere.

Once evening falls, the skyline of Columbus takes an almost magical appearance.

The table decoration were bright and fun.

David brought a few of his classic cars. Here they are with his Mustang. 1967, I believe, but I'm sure he'll correct me if I'm wrong. There was also an old Buick Eight (1952 maybe) and a 1972 (maybe) Cadillac.

Tooth Fairy Billboard

Several months ago, I took some portraits of two little girls. Toward the end of the session, they were playing dress-up and one of them wore a princess costume -- with a toothbrush.
That image ended up being much larger-than-life-size on a billboard to advertise a dentist's office. It's on High street going North, before getting into Merion Village. The wires look bad here in the still picture, but when you're moving in a car, you don't really notice them

It's always fun to see my photos on billboards.

Melissa is our first Senior for the class of 2009. We did her portraits on Saturday afternoon, and the weather looked nasty. It poured for the first part -- luckily we were inside. Amazingly, it cleared up just as we were to go outside for that part of the session and it ended up being a beautiful day.Melissa is also one of our Ambassadors to Dublin Scioto High School. Ask her about having your Senior Portraits done at Squier Photography and she'll tell you all about it and give you a card. Connor at Five Weeks

Connor's Mom was fortunate enough to win one of the door prizes at the Baby Bonanza in March. At the time, she looked like the big day would be real soon! He was born near the end of March -- you can do the math.
Anyway, the family came in on Saturday morning for Connor's first portrait session. At first, he didn't seem too excited about the whole process, but he calmed down to let us capture some great expressions.

Cruising the Bahamas

This is another personal post. We went on a cruise at the end of March. It was a great break from reality and tons of fun. I had never been swimming in the Atlantic and I have to say -- it's much warmer than the Pacific! And the water (at least where we were) was so clear. I always thought those pictures you see in travel magazines had the colors pumped up. That's really how it looks.
We saw a bunch of fish snorkeling, learned about Pirates in Nassau, ate a lot on the ship, won some prizes (nothing big, though), and basically had a great time with the family. We didn't take any way to check e-mail and our phones didn't work, so we were really on vacation. I took one of the big cameras, but should have left it home. I only took a few photos with it. Almost everything was with a point and shoot.
We ended up staying a couple days in Ft. Lauderdale since our plane was way overbooked. They made us an offer we couldn't refuse. ;-) The airline was great about the whole thing. They were so desperate that they looked through all of our baggage on the plane and got it off. Then they gave us two rooms in the Airport Hilton for two nights. And they covered all of our meals, too. So, it was like another mini-vacation tagged on at the end.
Take a look at the slideshow of snapshots from our trip. Remember, these are just fun, sometimes goofy, vacation memories. They're not our normal, portrait-quality images. But you knew that, already. ;-)

What is the Squier Ambassador Program?

Squier Ambassadors are high school juniors who are chosen to represent Squier Photography to their friends and acquaintances for their Senior Portraits.

What does a Squier Ambassador do?
A Squier Ambassador agrees to:

Have their Senior Portraits taken by Squier Photography in April or May of their Junior year.

Show their Senior portraits to friends and acquaintances and tell them how much you enjoyed having your portraits made.

Pass out as many Ambassador Cards as you can. The more you hand out, the more chance of earning rewards! Your friends must turn these cards in for you to receive credit!

Represent Squier Photography exclusively.

What does a Squier Ambassador receive in return?

A Deluxe Senior Sitting for $50 (regularly $100): this sitting includes a variety of indoor and outdoor poses at absolutely no cost to you!

If you order your own senior portraits within two weeks of us posting your proofs online, you will receive a $50 credit toward your order. If you order after your proofs have been online for two weeks, you will not receive this credit.

Ambassador Cards with your photograph on it to pass out to friends. Your friends receive 16 free wallet prints when they return your card and have their Senior Portraits taken by Squier Photography. The cards also allow us to track how many referrals you have sent to us.

$10 cash for each senior that we photograph that you sent to us. If you send 10 or more seniors, you will receive $15 for each after the first 10.

Up to two additional sessions at times of your choice during your senior year. These can include a family portrait session, individual session or a friends session.

If you have a facebook account, we will provide a way for you to link your senior portrait slideshow directly onto your page.

Baby Bonanza 2008

You may remember the post last month about the Baby Bonanza. You also may be wondering what happened, because I never blogged about it. Well, it did happen! I'm just a bit behind in my announcement posts. It took place on March 15th and it was a whirlwind of a day for us.

Not only did we have the show (where I photographed the events, too), but our son's Blue and Gold banquet for Cub Scouts was the same day. It was his last year, a crossing over ceremony, so we couldn't really bail on him. We had someone help out in the booth for the last couple hours and pack up. I drove back as soon as I could to help load up the car, then back to the Cub Scout banquet.

Anyway, the Baby Bonanza took place at the Aladdin Shrine Center near Easton. It's an interesting venue with tiered levels and lots of stairs. Thankfully, there are a lot of ramps for everyone with strollers, so that wasn't a big issue. It made it easier to load and unload the booth, too.

And while I'm on the subject of the booth, here are some pictures of it. This year we had a double booth and it was so nice having the space to talk and visit with people.
We even had a coloring table so the kids had something to do while they waited for their parent to finish talking. You can kind of see it in the picture below down on the right. Parents loved that their kids had a place to hang out instead of haning on ... to them. ;-)
One of the highlights of the Baby Bonanza each year is the Diaper Derby. Yes, that's right -- baby races. Who knew they'd be so fun? Well, if you're a parent, you can understand why they're funny, at least. Here they are at the start of the race. Off in a flash!
There was much concern when one baby didn't understand the rules. These two stopped and tried to give an explanation, not realizing that another baby was racing toward the finish line.
After the grueling race, the winner had no comment.
There were also activities for parents like how to use your stroller as a piece of exercise equipment and how to cook meals quickly that the whole family will eat.
And, of course, there was fun for parents and kids together.
That parachute looks like so much fun. I think we have a smaller one somewhere. I should go find it.
There was a lot going on throughout the entire day. And, of course, there were tons of vendors who had all kinds of things for your kids. I can't wait for next year. Though I hope that's the only thing we have to do that day. We were exhausted at the end of the day.

Worthington Kilbourne Baseball 2008

A couple months ago I was asked to put together the baseball schedule for the Worthington Kilbourne Wolves baseball team. We had done this once before, two years ago, and it was a lot of fun, so we were excited to do it again.
The poster usually has a photo of the seniors on the team along with the schedule. This time they had a theme for the poster (last time they didn't want one). We were lucky in that we got one of the only warm days in March. There was a big snowstorm the day after these pictures were taken. In the top picture you can see the storm clouds rolling in.
